Here is how the “Acres of Diamonds” story goes…
In ancient Persia, there once was a prosperous farmer named Al Hafed.
His land had been good to him, yielding lush orchards, grain fields and
gardens. One day a visitor to his farm told Hafed about diamonds and
their unlimited worth. Upon hearing this, Al Hafed decided to go off in
search of the great riches that the diamonds promised. He sold his farm
and left his family in the care of others. A man obsessed, Hafed
traveled far and wide desperately searching for diamonds, but he found
nothing. Finally, penniless and in rags, in a fit of despair Al Hafed
drown himself.
Meanwhile, back on the farm that Al Hafed sold, its new owner was
watering his camel in his lush, bountiful garden one day when he noticed
an ordinary rock, except that from its core it reflected all the colors
of the rainbow. The rock was placed on his mantel and forgotten until
the same visitor that had told Al Hafed of diamonds came to call. When
his gaze fell upon the rock on the mantel, he excitedly exclaimed, “That
is a diamond. Has Al Hafed returned?” “No,” replied the farmer, “That is
just a rock. The farm is covered with them.” And, indeed, it was. The
same rich, fertile ground that Al Hafed had abandoned in search of
riches harbored the biggest diamond mine known to mankind.
This is a true story.

Dr. Russell H. Conwell was a lecturer, who from 1877 to 1925 delivered
what some believe to be the finest speech of all times. In fact, his
lecture was so compelling that he gave it more than 6,000 times across
the country, making millions of dollars. Conwell used the proceeds from
this lecture to help found Temple University, one of the first
universities to offer affordable education to working-class Americans.
The entire speech is displayed on their website at
